The cause (and need)

We are raising money and seeking other support for two schools at Alotau because the local people value education and because there are very limited resources.

In some ways the formal education system in PNG does not have much.  The items we take for granted in Australia - books, libraries, computers, stationery, play/sport equipment, student equipment - are not available or are rare.  There is not much money to go around.

What they do have though are highly dedicated professionals and families and a strong value for education.  Many children walk tens of kilometres to and from school each day and continue their years at schooling for as long as possible.  Many parents work hard on minimum pay to support their child's education.  There is no welfare or family benefit (gvt) support and many regions have limited job opportunities.  Even with this the people are incredibly resilient and the bonds of family and family wellbeing are very strong.

And need...

The Koeabule Primary School and Alotau International School have written to us stating the items that their schools need (or desire) to advance education.

These items include:
  • Library books (of all varieties for early primary)
  • Big Book library series books
  • Teaching materials
  • Sports equipment (even second hand)
  • Music equipment
  • Computers for teachers and students (even second hand)
  • PA systems
  • Stationery
  • Basic furniture
  • First aid kits
  • Classroom floor mats
  • Student desks and artwork tables
Where possible we will source these locally in PNG.  We can also arrange for transport of some of these items from Australia to the schools.

For Koeabule Primary School we have the support and are liaising with Lydia Deilala (Principal), Billy Camillo (School Chair) and Charlie Hesaboda (Teacher).

For Alotau International School we have the support and are liaising with Lucy Kula (Principal) and Patrick Panta (Teacher).
